ASSESSMENT NOTES

LECTURE/DISCUSSION

BY THIS TIME, the students have learned the definition of art. The elements of art were introduced, and discussion focused on line, one of these elements

DRAWING ASSIGNMENT

This drawing assignment, intended as formative assessment tool, was also meant to draw out the students' latent talent, albeit hidden or yet to be discovered, by working on something closer to their heart: their home.

In their drawings, the students indeed showed the ability to manipulate lines and shapes to compose intended scenes. Unknowingly, they also used other elements that are yet to be covered in future meetings, such as form, texture, space, and values. The discussion about, and the use of, color – another element of art – was likewise reserved for later activities.

It is evident at this stage that some students were inclined to add texts or labels in their drawings. In subsequent drawing activities they would be advised to refrain from doing so, and instead they would be given the challenge to let their pictures 'speak' for themselves and deliver the message through visual (rather than textual) representation.
