ASSESSMENT NOTES

LECTURE/DISCUSSION

At the end of the lecture/discussion, the students were expected to able to define arts. They were also expected to list the elements of art. Likewise, the students were expected to be able to define and describe a line which is one of the elements of art, as well as identify the different kinds of lines.

The lesson presentation was deliberately made as simple as possible so as not to 'overwhelm' the students who were unsure of what to expect from this class and 'this' instructor. The idea of art as fun was also brought up.

ACTIVITY

They were given this drawing exercise, inspired by other art students' works posted in the Art Teacher's Resource web site, titled "Expressive Lines". The students were instructed to try to make as many types of lines as they could; repeat each type of line several times; try all types of lines: wavy, curly, jagged, dashes, fat, thin, etc.; and fill the page with as many lines as they could.

In this exercise, the students were expected to be able to demonstrate how to draw different kinds of lines, that was all. No judgment was passed over the resulting overall design or composition, which at this stage was most likely accidental rather than deliberate.

This drawing exercise was used for formative assessment purposes. The students' understanding of lines would be reinforced futher by future lectures/discussions on the other elements of art as well as the principles of art, and through more creative and challenging drawing assignments ahead.
