Our Young Executives in Action

by Rafael A. Pulmano

Officers of the Young Executives Society (YES!) met to discuss a financing problem. Recalling and applying what they’ve learned in their business courses, they decided to turn that problem into a business opportunity.

Here’s how they did it.

YES! officers meet to brainstorm a situation

Business students brainstorm their first challenge as newly installed YES! officers. (From left to right) Reginalt Joseph, Treasurer; Leah Laamad, Vice-President; Sackett Peter, President; and, Emelisse-Yoma Santos, Secretary.

On September 6, 2017 YES! joined the club fair competition hosted by the Office of Student Life at the College of Micronesia-FSM national campus.

To generate traffic for its booth, YES! launched its own promotional contest, offering to give away $5.00 cash awards to five lucky students from among those who would visit the club’s booth, take a selfie there, and email a copy of their photo to the club adviser.

The offer, of course, was contingent upon the club’s winning the competition.

YES! won first place. It expected to receive a $150.00-cash prize. What it got, instead, was a gift certificate.

So where would YES! get the $25.00 cash for its five selfie contest winners?

That was the problem.

“Let’s auction this certificate and sell it to the highest bidder” was one of the proposed solutions.

“No, let’s sue Student Life for breach of contract,” was the counter-proposal from one who obviously remembered his lessons in Business Law.

“Why don’t we raffle it off? If we practice our Marketing skills, we might be able to raise more than $150.00,” came a third idea.

The decision was unanimous.

A date was set, tickets were printed and sold, and, last September 27, the raffle draw was held at the Center for Entrepreneurship and the winner announced.

On that same day, selfie winners were all smiles as they received their $5.00 bills.

These young executives’ smart business decision netted for their club a total of $232.00 in ticket sales in just two weeks!

Not bad for its first fund-raising problem, er, opportunity, this semester.
