SIX COMFSM STUDENTS GET STAP SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE

The Samahang Tagalog Atbp. sa Ponape (STAP) has awarded six students from the College of Micronesia-FSM scholarship assistance. Each student will receive $500 for the school year payable at $250 per semester.

STAP is a regional association of Filipinos in Pohnpei whose primary purpose is to encourage Micronesian citizens to pursue a post-high school education through its Scholarship Assistance Program. Application forms and guidelines are available online and may be downloaded from http://comfsm.fm/~pulmano/opportunities.html.

In a simple luncheon and awarding ceremony held at the China Restaurant on August 5, 2008, STAP President Rafael Pulmano congratulated the scholars, who are: Christopher Delcampo, Merleener Elias, Fritz Gallen, Warren De Martini Neth Leben, Grace Ann Tobin, and LaShauna Wilson.

Freddie Ricafrente, STAP Founding President and chair of the Scholarship Committee, also conveyed his congtratulations to the selected students and expressed hope that they will continue to avail of this scholarship benefit in the coming semesters by striving to maintain or even improve their GPAs thru diligent studies.

COMFSM President Spensin James, who had been invited to grace the occasion, expressed his appreciation to the association for its continued support to the college and its students. James personally handed the checks to the scholars.

Several officers and board members of STAP and Joseph Felix from COM-FSM also attended the luncheon.

In his closing remarks, Pulmano explained to the scholars that they, too, could help fellow Micronesians avail of the same benefit they have received by passing on the information to others, as well as by supporting STAP's various fund-rasing activities like the Annual Fun Run/Walk and Bingo Social events.

One such Bingo Social was held only last July 27, 2008 at the PICS Cafeteria, during which STAP raised $1,954 for the scholarship fund.

STAP thanked the generous sponsors who donated the prizes for the said fund-raising drive. They were Best Buy, CTSI/Western Union, VCS & Construction Supply, FSM Telecommunications Corporation, MedPharm Pharmacy & Optical, Do-It-Best Hardware, PT&S/FSM Line/Pohnpei Transfer & Storage, XIX Store, Allison MacConnel, Care Care, Grace's Bakery, Kaselehlia Diner, True Value, RJ Electrical & Refrigeration Services, Capitol Fabricator & Trading Co., and Drops of Life.

Bank of Guam, through its Vice President and Branch Manager, Vida Ricafrente, has made a special donation of $500 to STAP 's scholarship fund.
